Dyson AM09 Fan Heater bills itself as both a cool fan and space heater that will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. In typical Dyson fashion it’s a space saving, slick device that basically builds off their prior fan and heater offerings and combines the best elements of each into a remarkably efficient and beautiful machine. This is the latest device to use Air Multiplier technology. The Dyson AM09 Fan Heater has some impressive features and though pricey it’s energy efficient and will positively impact your power usage and heating/cooling bills.
If you’re in the market looking for a space heater/fan combo there are basic considerations safety, features, output, usability & price
Safety: We have two young children so that is my number one consideration. Fortunately there are NO visible moving parts, fins or heating elements to worry about. You can easily wipe it clean and no burning dust smells when cranked up to maximum. Interestingly the AM09 had very low surface temperatures even with it’s output was at maximum. You can stick your hand directly through the center of the futuristic looking unit (which my kids did immediately) while it’s shooting a stream of hot air without concern. It also has a very handy internal kill switch which shuts the unit off it’s accidentally kicked over (which also happened during my testing)In heater mode it can never overheat due to it’s energy efficient automatic temperature control.
Features: Dyson AM09 Fan Heater has a very compact, attractive ergonomic modern design. It comes with an equally slick magnetic remote that fits snuggly in its storage cradle, It’s about knee height & weighs about 5 pounds. My kids could move it around easily but its bottom heavy with a wide lip around the base to avoid accidental tipping. At the top of the arched unit there is a dead spot that is cool enough to pick up after long use. It’s crafted from the same tough thermoplastic used in police riot helmets so it will take a beating from the solid base to center air multiplying oval. It has an easily set sleep timer making it ideal for nighttime use. It’s very unobtrusive and the black/nickel unit I tested could fit anyone’s office or home décor, it also comes in white/silver.
Output: This thing kicks! The brushless motor is reportedly over 30% more efficient than the original Dyson Hot while 75% more quiet, it cranks huge volumes of air channeled through tiny apertures within the loop amplifier. Like their line of vacuums this technology is way more efficient and powerful than any other bar heater or blade fan I’ve ever used. Regular heaters heat air in front of the unit, which gets cooler the further away from the heat source. The Dyson AM09 Fan Heater heats rooms evenly, it heated my very large basement (I live in a Ranch so my basement runs the the length of my house) evenly and quickly under 8 minutes, my kids rooms under five. The units thermostat automatically shuts off once it gets to the desired temperature, making it very green. It’s a powerful little unit that was surprisingly quiet its the first fan heater with Quiet Mark accreditation, we watched TV and chatted while the unit was on full blast as it quickly raised the temperature of my basement 20 degrees! The cooling fan is just as amazing! You could feel the powerful fan 30 feet away on direct tilt and on wide angle oscillation maybe half that range. I even played with cranking the heat then switching to cooling fan mode and the effect was impressive almost instantaneous. The Jet Focus either focuses for long range or diffuses for wide projection to mix the surrounding air this makes the AM09 the only cooling fan you’d need. After working up a sweat jumping rope I cranked the unit, put it on direct tilt and got a chill within seconds!
Usability: It’s so simple and straightforward to use. Easy to assemble (see video above) The layout on the remote is clear and the units built in temperature, oscillation and intensity on the sturdy base are easy to get too. Whether you need to instantly heat a large room (wide angle oscillation) or cool down fast. (direct tilt)
Price: Admitteldy $449.99 is a hefty price tag. Dyson is currently offering $100 off and free shipping until June13th though you can shop around on line and find one as low as $299. The two years manufacture parts and labor warranty is a definite plus for such an investment. A case can be made however that this unit is extremely energy efficient and powerful. It offers an option for homeowners or apartment dwellers that spend a lot of time in a single room to save on energy costs on heating or cooling the whole house. It cuts out when the desired temperature is set and only kicks in to keep it there. Energy costs can eventually justify the initial investment.
Bottom line: Aside from the sticker shock, this is hands down both the best heater and fan I’ve ever used! It can handle both tasks equally well and efficiently, quietly and most importantly safely. It has top of the line two years customer warranty for parts and labor, It’s energy efficient and it looks like a piece of art. This is a year round device that in my opinion can justify the initial outlay. If you need a last minute Geeky Father’s Day gift or are looking for a quality Fan/Heater Combo unit this is really the best value on the market.
